Question 01: What operating systems can ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drives operate on?

ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drives can work in Microsoft® Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista and MacOS 8.6, 9.0 or higher. New drivers are made available for download here.



Question 02: Can ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive be affected by any computer virus?

ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive is designed to work like a typical hard disk so that users can use it without training. Therefore, ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive like hard disk and floopy disk, can become vulnerable to virus. Your computer must install anti-virus program in order to protect the ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drives.



Question 03: Will ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive works on PC/Mac?

ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive works on most PC and Mac platforms that support USB. Nevertheless, we recommend that users check with the manufacturer of their computers on USB 1.1 compatibility.



Question 04: I just bought a second ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive. Do I need to repeat the setup process again?

This would depend on the drive model. ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive that share the similar model will not require another driver after the first installation. However different ThumbDrive™ models, for example, ThumbDrive™ 2Smart and ThumbDrive™ Mini, would require 2 different drivers to be installed.



Question 05: Can I use my ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive as a bootdisk?

ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drives are supported by most motherboards with BIOS released after 2002 as bootable device. We recommend you to contact your motherboard manufacturer or your BIOS vendor to check for USB bootability.



Question 06: Can I protect my files from accidental deletion?

Some ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive has a write protection switch at the bottom. When switch is in the "Unlocked" position, you can write data to the ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive. When switch is in the "Locked" position, you can only read from the ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive.



Question 07: How long can ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive maintain the integrity of the stored data?

Data stored in ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drives can last about ten years without losing any integrity.



Question 08: How do I read the LED?

The LED is lit when the ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive is inserted to your PC. This confirms the connectivity between ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive and the PC. The LED starts blinking the moment you initiate a file transfer. Please DO NOT REMOVE the ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive during a write operation as this may cause loss of data.



Question 09: Can I share ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive over the LAN?

ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive can be accessed over a network to enable sharing of data among multiple users.



Question 10: What is the difference between ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive and USB Hard Drive?

USB Hard Drive is much more heavier and bulky. It is also vulnerable to shock and vibration due to its internal moving parts. ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive is smaller and lighter. ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive does not have any moving parts and this makes it ideal for mobile use.



Question 11: Does the ThumbDrive™ Smart works on MacOS 8.6?

There is no device driver required for ThumbDrive™ Smart to work in MacOS 8.6. However you need to make sure that your MacOS 8.6 is installed with USB Mass Storage Support 1.3.5. Please visit Apple's website for more information.



Question 12: How to install driver?

  1. Download the driver required from here.
  2. Save the driver to your hard disk.
  3. Unzip the driver to your hard disk.
  4. Plug in your ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive and wait for "Add New Hardware Wizard" to appear on the screen.
  5. Click "Next" button.
  6. Choose to search for a better driver.
  7. Select "Specify a location".
  8. Locate the folder that contained the driver files in your hard disk.
  9. Click "Next" to install the driver.
  10. Click "Finish" to end the installation.
  11. The ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive should be ready to use.


Question 13: What if "Add New Hardware Wizard" doesn't appear during driver installation?

In case the "Add New Hardware Wizard" does not appear on the screen when the device plug-in, please follow the procedures below:
  1. After plug-in your ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive, right click the "My Computer".
  2. Select "Properties" and "System Properties" window will appear.
  3. Please click on "Device Manager" if you're running on Windows 98/SE.
  4. For Windows ME/2000/XP, please click on "Hardware" tab before click on "Device Manager".
  5. Under "Device Manager", please click the "+" sign beside "Disk Drives" and "Universal Serial Bus Controller".
  6. Search for Trek Device after the "Disk Drives" and "Universal Serial Bus Controller" expanded.
  7. You will see an exclamation or a question mark symbol on the Trek device.
  8. Double click on the device name.
  9. Click on the "Driver" tab and follow by "Update Driver" button.
  10. The "Add New Hardware Wizard" will appear. Please continue follow the instruction above.


Question 14: What does the Login Software do?

Login Software will partition your ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive into 2 separated sections. The first section is known as "Public Area". The second section is known as "Private Area". Data stored inside the "Public Area" can be accessed by any users. However, data stored in "Private Area" can only be accessed by the master user or registered users privileged by the master. To set up the master user, user must initialize the device first.



Question 15: Files inside the ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive are corrupted. What must be done to solve this issue?

This problem only can be solved by doing a Windows Format. After plug-in the device, a "Removable Disk" icon will appear under My Computer. Right click the icon and click on "Format". Set the "File system" to FAT32, check on "Quick Format" and click "Start" button.

PS: Please note that Windows Format will erase all the data inside your ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive.

After format, try to transfer some files into the ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive and plug out your device. Plug it back again and check the usability of the files inside.

For users with ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive that supports login software, it is recommended to follow the procedures below:
  1. Click the Partition Page.
  2. Scroll the bar all the way to the left. Private Area will be set to 0MB.
  3. This will format the device.


Question 16: What can I do if I cannot open the files downloaded from ThumbDrive™ Portal?

Most of the files downloaded from ThumbDrive™ Portal require WinZip program to open if your operating system is Windows 98/SE/ME/2000. The WinZip program can be downloaded at www.winzip.com.

If WinZip reported errors such as file corrupt, CRC error or you found nothing inside the files you downloaded, please clear your web browser cache and download the driver again.



Question 17: I forgot the login password to access private area. What must be done to recover my password?

Depending on the version of the login software, users may reset the device by scrolling the scroll bar all the way to the left (under the Partition Page). This means, setting the capacity, all to public area. 0MB for private area.

If users are using Bio Swipe, they can do a reset by failing to scan 3 times while trying to login to the private area. Alternatively, the first method above can also be used.

PS: Please note that resetting will erase all the data inside your ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive.



Question 18: My ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive is faulty. Is it possible to exchange for a new one?

One to one exchange is impossible. Customers will need to bring their device back together with purchase receipt to the service centre via post or personally coming down to office.



Question 19: ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive capacity is not correct. What must be done to gain back the full capacity?

To gain back the access to full capacity, users can try to check their computer settings by not hiding any files. There could be a few hidden files inside the device which are taking up the space.

Alternatively, users can do a Windows Format to ensure that all files are being erased to full up the capacity back to default.

PS: Please note that Windows Format will erase all the data inside your ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive.



Question 20: ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive capacity still not correct after format. What else can I do?

Some models of ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drives have the ability to switch between public and private area. This is an extra feature of Trek ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drives to help consumers to protect their sensitive information.

If you suspect some of your ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive space is lost due to the hidden private area, you can always go to our Support Page to download our Login Software and fix the problem.

PS: Please note that adjust partition size of public and private area will reset and erase all the data inside the ThumbDrive™ USB Flash Drive.
